I was Gabe's high school rowing coach during his four years with the St. John’s Mens Varsity Rowing Team. He arrived at our boathouse as a total beginner, but through determination and enthusiastic hard work developed into an athlete who was chosen by his peers to serve as team captain during his senior year. During his time with the team, he was a constant presence in fast boats and a source of positivity with his infectious enthusiasm. From the minute he set foot in the boathouse, he was ready to go. He was always driven and committed and that kind of energy transferred to whichever boat he was in and the whole program, and even to me as coach. That enthusiasm and energy are traits you can neither teach nor coach; it is there and in great measure with Gabriel. There are very few athletes who can make a boat go fast by sheer force of will since rowing is inherently a team sport. I count Gabriel Salazar as one of those athletes who can.
