As one of the founding faculty, I taught Algebra I, Geometry, and Biology to our first class of high school freshmen. In my first year of teaching, I faced many challenges including planning and adapting curriculum for three different classes, building a positive learning culture, and helping 23 unique individuals navigate the various social and academic stressors that come with their first year of high school. A number of educator friends told me that the first year would be the worst and I'd agree with them about the stress and restless nights, but I also found joy in seeing students rise above their own personal expectations and engage in meaningful work.
