Our selection of plants and trees is unmatched by most nurseries in the Southeast. We are the top choice for wholesale plants because of our best-in-class customer service, and our competitive pricing gives landscapers plenty of room to maintain profit margins. Our goal is to be "the Highlight of your Day!" We help landscapers focus on their business, and maintain their bottom line reducing "soft cost". For instance, our large inventory gives us the ability to ship all the material at once, reducing the number of supplies you need to coordinate. We also provide credit terms and value engineering to help landscapers substantially increase profitability. Working with just one supplier, from the ground cover to trees, means that the relationship is more valuable and worthwhile for both parties. Although I started this business in 1995, my focus has been on building my career in the Industrial Supply industry. Since the acquisition of HUB in 2016, I’ve taken on a lesser role there so I can invest more time here at G&S. As a leader, I’m skilled at managing resources; not only in capital, but for people as well. I’m keenly aware of how much responsibility to give each person so that there is a growth stretch, but at the same time not too much that they become overworked.

Lake City, FL I never set out to own a wholesale nursery. I discovered early on that if you hire the right people, and treat your customers well, your business will thrive. As we grew into a large wholesale nursery, we expanded to serve landscapers, garden centers, and other nurseries. I attribute our success to hiring good people, then getting out of their way to let them take care of the customers. This is what allowed me to keep this business running, while being able to focus on my career at HUB in the industrial supply industry.

As we grew by becoming experts in serving niche markets, I knew that we could do more to care for our clients. We recognized the opportunity to help lower their inventory and cost by providing same day shipments, and opened warehouses throughout the US so that products could ship within one working day. With this strategy, we gained many new clients who now rely on us as their one and only industrial supply house. To scale the business outside of our geographic base in central Florida, customers needed to know they could trust us to get them what they needed even faster than their local distributor, so we set out to improve our fill rates. We created a new system, where we could see minute by minute tracking, displaying data on several key performance indicators. This helped the team become more competitive, and streamlined processes. With business still growing, we needed move away from our current distribution model – which relied primarily on a personal sales call within a geographic region – for a more cost-effective way of reaching customers. We lowered our cost-to-serve by using a combination of phone calls, in-person sales calls, mail and email marketing to reach a wider customer base. However, I attribute most of our success to our employees. We have cultivated exceptional talent, and have kept our team in-tact by empowering staff to take ownership of their position. We implemented a no-questions-asked policy where employees are permitted to make a “$1,000 decision” without requiring approval. This empowerment encourages sensible, pragmatic choices when dealing with customers. The result is that employees are satisfied, and new recruits are often the product of positive word-of-mouth. After all, a great team makes a great company.

My vision was to change our business focus - from a consumable supplier that aggregated products, to a solution provider focused on solving customer problems. My vision to take HUB from being a small local distributor to competing for business on a national scale required a new way of thinking, starting with analyzing our existing customer base. This made all the difference. I revamped our business model to specialize in developing unique niche industries, by seeking to understand why they ‘lost sleep at night’. We researched the small details and the obstacles facing each niche market, then restructured our company and products to solve those industrial challenges. Our goal was to streamline processes to improve sales, delivery times, and key performance indicators. To compete in new territories against local distributors and online against Internet re-sellers, We needed to improve in a variety of areas: from answering the phone quicker, to ordering products more efficiently, to improving fill rates and order accuracy. Our goal to provide a best-in-class customer experience was driven by exceeding our client’s expectations through outstanding customer service. We became known for making promises like, “If you call us, you’ll be talking to a real person in less than two rings;” propelling us to become one of the fastest growing distributors of industrial goods in the industry.

Lake City, FL When I first started out in sales, the hiring manager at Hub wanted to make sure that I was hungry enough to expand the business. My territory was producing about $50,000 annually, out of the entire company’s revenue of $500,000, when I started working it in 1996. I worked hard to build relationships with customers, and quickly earned their trust. I devoted myself to learning their industries, and identifying areas for process improvement. I stood out from the other account executives because of my reputation for by doing my homework, asking the right questions, and even working on a client’s production floor to help with suggestions for product improvements, productivity gains, and lowering costs. Achieving success as a specialist in your industry doesn't happen overnight. It took me years, but I grew to become an indispensable resource to my clients. I cultivated my territory to over $2,500,000 annually, in less than ten years’ time. That’s when I really started to think big -- I decided to purchase the company.
