In October 2016, Byng was acquired by Inviqa and I was given the job title "Senior System Administrator" which started as a mixed DevOps Engineer / Support Engineer role. The need has been so great for an engineer with such versatile skills at Inviqa that I'm still fulfilling the same role(s).During the Inviqa years I mentored and supervised junior colleagues, participated in DevOps project work on client sites (GCP, Kubernetes), assisted our technical consultancy department, did various migrations (Google Workspace, Atlassian Jira/Confluence, AWS, GCP) and on a few occasions I even ended up doing technical architect work (AWS, Azure).Apart from the client/project sides of my role(s), in the recent years I often found myself in a position where Inviqa colleagues internally needed my technical expertise and I often had to explain complex technical matters in a simple and enjoyable manner.

As Byng grew, so did my responsibilities, the projects we delivered became bigger and more complex. In 2015 I started mentoring and line managing a junior colleague and was consequently promoted to Lead System Administrator. This was effectively an IT Operations Manager role, I was overseeing project go-lives and ensured that we delivered stable solutions for Byng's clients, I was acting as the primary technical support contact for Byng's clients, as well as still fulfilling a Senior DevOps Engineer's role and actively working together with our agile in-house development team and contractors during the sprints.

    • System Administrator
      • Oct 2012 - Jun 2015

After moving to the UK I started working for Byng, a small startup at the time. My role was mainly DevOps focused: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Rackspace Cloud, RHEL/CentOS Linux, MySQL, Jenkins, Docker, scripting/automation (Bash, Ansible, Python), Atlassian stack (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket).I was working closely with the development team, I provisioned all the AWS servers (from development to production) during these years and configured these to PCI standards, ensured production server uptime, identified and fixed infrastructure bottlenecks, handled high traffic, implemented load-balanced and replicated server and database setups, performed various migrations, version upgrades and I always had sets of backups and a disaster recovery plan at hand.Byng being a small company, I had some other responsibilities: client technical consultancy and support, working closely with the project management team (discovery, cost estimates, project delivery), managing the infrastructure of Byng's two offices (London and Leeds).

    • Telecommunications
    • NOC Engineer
      • Sep 2011 - Apr 2012

After spending 5 years at T-Systems Hungary, I wanted to gain experience in other parts of the telecommunications / internet service industry. I joined BTel (Business Telecom Ltd), a medium-sized ISP in Hungary who opened their new office in the Budapest Internet Exchange building at that time.As a senior member of the newly formed NOC Engineering Team, I encountered a wide range of technologies: Cisco switches, HP servers and storage systems, VMware ESX virtualised HA environments, CentOS and Debian Linux servers (running Apache, MySQL, BIND DNS, Postfix, Nagios).Additionally, I supported the 2nd line team with complex customer support issues and served as an escalation point, planned and rolled out infrastructure upgrades, frequently communicated with upstream providers / RIPE NCC and participated in an on-call rota.

Throughout the years at T-Systems Hungary (as a member of the SysOps Team) I worked with a wide range of technologies: VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V virtualised HA environments, Dell/HP servers, Cisco switches, routers and IP phones, 500+ servers (Windows Server 2003/2008, Debian, RHEL/CentOS Linux), operated large scale tape backup solutions (HP Data Protector).I served as a support escalation point (2nd/3rd line) during office hours as well as participated in an on-call rota, worked closely with business partners and customers to resolve their more complex technical queries.I really enjoyed working at T-Systems Hungary and being a member of that particular SysOps Team, it was a really versatile and exciting role, on a few occasions I even had the opportunity to act as a pre-sales engineer.

    • Engineering Intern
      • Jun 2006 - Apr 2007

I was fortunate to secure an internship near the end of my university years at Hungary's largest systems integrator. I developed my skills quickly and eventually I managed to land a permanent role at T-Systems Hungary as a full-time IT Support Engineer.
