• Co-construction and collective appropriation of knowledge for on-farm management of wheat diversity
      • Jan 2019 - Jun 2020

Agricultural modernization led to labor division and the relegation of the farmer to the role of end user of innovations developed by other actors, including pure line varieties adapted to homogenized environments. Farmers' seeds and participatory breeding were born from the will of Farmers' Seed Network (RSP) members and researchers to prove the interest of population varieties for agro-ecological cultivation practices, and to develop a selection of varieties adapted directly on the farm. This development of farmers' seeds is done in conjunction with the development of multiple knowledge around cultivated biodiversity but also agro-ecosystems and the processing of products from these seeds. The success of the initiative poses organizational issues, including on the way of sharing knowledge and know-how in various groups of farmers. The aim of the postdoc was to accompany farmers collectives in their thought around collective organization and knowledge sharing. We developed a method based on KCP (Knowledge-Concepts-Proposals), aiming at sharing knowledge and develop concrete projects for collectives to implement responding to their problematics. 4 workshops with different farmers collectives where organized, leading to a large variety of projects. • pHD - Participatory management of crop diversity and on farm breeding for diverse wheat mixtures
      • Oct 2015 - Dec 2018

Developing agroecological systems such as Organic Farming (OF) is limited by the lack of adapted varieties and is often not based on a sufficient deployment of crop genetic diversity in space and over time. Few breeders specifically breed for OF and they cannot develop varieties adapted to the whole range of farming practices and environmental conditions encountered. Decentralizing plant breeding on farm using a participatory approach involving farmers may allow addressing these issues. This approach would allow developing populations-varieties or mixtures locally adapted and maintaining a high within-variety genetic diversity that may provide buffering effects for climatic variation and parasitic pressures and adaptation to directional climatic changes. Going that route induces strong needs in research on concepts and methods for crop biodiversity management. Our team has been involved in participatory wheat breeding since 2006 and aims at strengthening the knowledge on farmers’ practices for mixture breeding, assessing the efficiency for production, the potential effect on associated wild biodiversity and the impact on the deployment of crop genetic diversity at the farm scale and territory scales. The objectives are to propose a methodological framework for on farm management of mixtures and provide piece of information to base public policy measures for agricultural biodiversity maintenance and use. • Trainee, Research on participatory plant breeding project on wheat
      • Apr 2014 - Aug 2014

Context - Co-construction of a participatory wheat breeding program between the farmers, the researchers and the associations. The aims of this project is to create varieties adapted to local environments, develop methods and tools for the management and selection of cultivated biodiversity in the farms, and improve the learning and autonomy of the farmers regarding the management and selection of seeds. Due to the experimental design (created as a compromse between farmers constraints and researchers needs), a lot of data were missing. A statistical model was created to analyse the data. My work - Perform simulations to determine which experimental design fits best to the models developed so that the data analysis is the most accurate. This design is then recommended for decentralized plant breeding systems, when a lot of data are missing. --> Write R programs to generate experimental designs and data sets, and to analyse the results Show less
