As a deckhand on board a Norwegian Navy Fregatt, I was responsible for ensuring the vessel's external maintenance, including cleaning, rust removal, and painting. Additionally, I was responsible for maintaining ropes, anchors, hawsers, transfer equipment, and the vessel's workboats. My duties also included having a safety function in the event of fire, accident, or the need to clear the ship. I was responsible for anchoring and mooring, and I had watch functions on the bridge. For vessels with a helicopter, I was part of the flight deck crew, responsible for safety, fire and rescue preparedness during helicopter operations, and serving as a firefighter on board. My attention to detail and commitment to safety were essential to ensure the smooth operation of the vessel and the safety of its crew. Show less

As a user-controlled personal assistant for an individual with cerebral palsy, my role was to ensure that my supervisor could live a free and independent life on an equal footing with others in society. I provided both practical and personal assistance to facilitate an active life outside the home, as well as helping my supervisor to have as independent a life as possible. My duties included organizing everyday life according to my supervisor's wishes, providing practical assistance with tasks of daily life, and sometimes simple health services. I worked closely with my supervisor to ensure that I was meeting their needs and helping them to lead the life they wanted. Working as a user-controlled personal assistant required me to be the master of my own life, as I was responsible for my own schedule and ensuring that I was available for the hours my supervisor needed. This level of autonomy and responsibility was challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I was making a positive difference in someone's life was truly fulfilling. User-controlled personal assistance is a vital part of ensuring equal participation in society for disabled people, including those with mental health challenges. The scheme places great emphasis on the person who is to lead the scheme, and their ability to decide for themselves what kind of assistance is to be given, where, and when. It is important to note that the municipalities have a duty to offer user-directed personal assistance among their health and care services. Prima Assistance has extensive experience as a supplier of BPA, and I was proud to be a part of their team, helping to make a real difference in people's lives. Overall, my experience as a user-controlled personal assistant was challenging, rewarding, and deeply fulfilling. It taught me the importance of autonomy, responsibility, and empathy in the workplace, and gave me a profound appreciation for the value of assisting those in need. Show less
