I worked with Fred on a project to set up investigative journalism units in a number of newsrooms. He gave input into the development of the overall project workplan, and was a real resource to the participants. Fred was able to work on his to-dos and finish them on time and to a good standard. Whenever he encountered a situation outside the norm, he knew exactly how to act in an appropriate manner. Fred is careful to understand the instructions before starting, and habitually plans and sequences his own work and that of others. With his input, we were able to ensure that objectives were clearly established, and that work was systematically carried out in order to achieve the objectives. Fred has a clear understanding of his own weaknesses and others’ strengths and goes to the right people for help. In trainings, he was able to help others to address their weaknesses. He explains ideas clearly and in a way that is easy to understand. He also has the ability to listen carefully to what others are saying, to understand and then to respond appropriately. Fred is interested in finding out why things are the way they are, and he asks questions where there are any gaps in the knowledge. In the face of setbacks or adversity, he will continue to pursue the objective, and he doesn’t give up. Fred enjoys public speaking, and is eloquent, clear and persuasive. He is an asset to any team he is on.

    • Third Party Monitoring (TPM) Manager: FCDO’s MESH II Programme in Somalia
      • Apr 2021 - Sep 2022

I was the third-party monitoring & evaluation team lead for the fieldwork on the Monitoring & Evaluation of Somalia Humanitarian (MESH II) program funded by the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The program had two components: the 2018-2022 Somalia Humanitarian and Resilience Programme (SHARP) and the 2016-2021 Somali Health and Nutrition Programme (SHINE). The aim of MESH II was to strengthen and extend the evidence base of the impact of UK humanitarian, resilience and health action and to support adaptive programming and evidence-based decision-making. I coordinated field third-party monitoring that focused on the verification of outputs across relevant partner activities. This was used to identify delivery issues including the accountability of cash-based programming, issues of staffing or supplies in health and nutrition activities, possible protection issues amongst IDPs/refugees, and others. I monitored over 250 health and nutrition sites and routinely managed 100+ field staff engaged in the capture of qualitative and quantitative data. We conducted 12,000+ sites visits over the period. This enabled near 'real time' and frequent data that signaled potential operational problems and ongoing successes. Show less
