Experience

    • Ecologist
      • Jan 2014 - Present

Working in a very beautiful part of the country, I started as a gardener learning heaps about rose pruning, amenity gardening and annual plantings, I am now in the role of ecological restoration, working in various areas around the Taupo District, restoring areas such as gullies, wetlands and lake edges and improving ecological habitats. One of the best examples is the restoration and mass native planting of Spa Park near the Taupo Bungee. First role in working in ecological restoration, working and living (as working with both, the Rangitoto team and the Auckland Regional Council team, we worked for up to a month at a time in various locations far from the Auckland base, resulting in us staying and living near where we were working but coming home for weekends) as part of a team of four or eight, working in some beautiful locations around the Auckland region also known as"the weed capital of the world" I have worked in almost all of the reserve's around Auckland such as Le Roys bush, Rangitoto/Motutapu Island and Albany and also most regional parks in Auckland such as Tawharanui, Shakespeare, also I have worked in some of the parks in Whangarei. All but most of the work with ecological restoration consists of controlling weed species though foliar spraying, chainsawing and cut-stumping weeds using various chemicals. The need to know what chemical works efficiently and effectively on what weed species is vital, as well as having a knowledge of most of the weed speices found (which is a lot in and around the Auckland region) and being able to differentiate weed specie plants from species of native plants that look very similar such as Climbing Asparagus and seedling Kahikateas. Also I have been involved with planting restoration such as the Twin Streams project in Waitakere Show less
