The Epistemic Reverse Side of Instrumental Images The object of investigation is instrumental images (images used by human actors) with reference to knowledge that arises in connection with their development and that is unavailable to the actors, such as open research questions and unproven concepts. Just as the respective form/technology of the image affects the relationships of understanding, representation and operative function of the instrumental images, so too – depending on image – does the type and manner of (non-) communication between research and application. The distance of actors from the epistemic and symbolic preconditions of the instrumental images increases with digitalisation. Images serving as examples are those used in medicine and psychology which reflect (1) the relation between facial morphology and signalling (expression) and (2) the relation between anatomy and function (the hand). The interdisciplinary team pursues the aims of (1) examining the role of instrumental images in activities in the transition from drawing/diagram to digital image in two different cases and (2) linking epistemic knowledge with instrumental images, working with (a) a data bank at the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) of Facial Action Coding System (FACS) (archive of expressions) and (b) the development of a platform (an expression atlas) for providing users in research, teaching and practice with access to history of science and image questions/problems that are relevant to current research on the facial expression. Project „Attention & Form“ The goal of the project is to acquire a meta-disciplinary perspective on form-based classification and systematization. We will investigate which »characteristics« have so much control over the observer’s attention that they inspire the creation of a theory. We will thus seek to precisely define what can be extrapolated from a form and how (in the sense of concrete technical media) this takes place. What captures one’s attention if form no longer exists in a discrete world of data? How can we reflect on the interaction between observer and observed, and how can the insights gained be applied to other scientific and creative disciplines and their respective ways of seeing? The comparative analysis should clarify that cultural factors and media (such as the formation of taste and style, tradition, and economic considerations) not only influence the investigation of natural objects (in disruptive ways), but can also be productive in the context of the natural sciences. Archive Matter nGbK In the course of the project Wissensspeicher, thematic perspectives emerged mainly from work on the collection of publications produced by the nGbK. The specific view of art fostered by the society often focusses on the question of possibilities and limits. “Art must have an effect” was the early motto, which frequently led and leads, among other things, to activistic demands being formulated after theoretical discussions. The knowledge acquired is represented on this Website in excerpts, rhizomatically, in the form of a review, like a physical archive. What started as a list of subjects and key words became an ABC, a memory bank, which makes it easier to transfer knowledge and provide access to the nGbK’s rich history. The nGbK’s Internet archive is composed of the announcements for past exhibitions. Projects realised before 2005 are accompanied by a title and list of persons involved. Selected exhibitions were expanded with additional material from our physical archives by the working group Wissensspeicher and linked to the home page. We would like to extend out thanks to the staff of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum, the Fontane Apotheke and the Mediathek of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin for their help and support with research and digitisation.
