I teach the course 'Heritage Visualisation in Action' for the MPhil in Digital Humanities and Culture course at Trinity College Dublin. The course is a project-based module, which provides a theoretically grounded practical introduction to the tools used in cultural heritage content visualisation. We look at 3D data capture (photogrammetry), processing (MeshLab), modelling (SketchUp) and output (Unity games engine). I am conducting research into ways in which disparate archaeological datasets can be linked together using digital technologies. A 'linked' archaeology holds out the promise of a radically different knowledge environment, where data can flow seamlessly from content provider to consumer. Half my time is spent developing technical solutions that might navigate the many obstacles that lie in the path of achieving such a goal. In this context I am interested in topics such as semantic web development, big data mining and analytical visualisations. The other half of the time, I am concerned with the philosophical and sociological implications of a linked archaeology. Show less
