• Master's Thesis: Designing resilient public spaces in Paris

  This thesis aims to understand how resilience issues are integrated into the design of public spaces in Paris through the paradigm shift in stormwater management. It comes shortly after the publication of the 6th IPCC report that highlights an unpredictable future in which cities, first to be affected by climate change, will have to adapt.We propose to address this paradigm shift through three hypotheses: 1) Paris, following Dutch design thinking, is moving towards rainwater integrated management inpublic spaces. It leads to new technical devices that modify the landscape and the function of public spaces. 2) This technical integration in public spaces cannot be sustainable if it is not socially accepted. It is therefore essential to make citizens aware of the rainwater management issues; 3) To achieve the goal of zero discharge as promoted in the SVdP, a new governance model must emerge. Therefore, water seems to get involved in urban project governance as a non-human stakeholder.These hypotheses are studied, in detail, through the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul development project (14th arrondissement).
