Francis Paulsson is a fantastic animator. He did some really great work for us on Mad Max. His work is so smooth and believable that you sometimes doubt whether what you are seeing is his key framed animation or the motion capture data. He’s got a wonderful gift for movement and posing and he captures both nuanced and dramatic action equally well. It’s not surprising then that he is also great in a motion capture suit! He just really has a great sense for the acting and the performance. Francis is also a super collaborative team player. He takes feedback extremely well and also offers insightful thoughts on all aspects of game development. In fact, I would oftentimes involve him in design discussions because I knew he would bring an interesting perspective to the conversation. The great thing about Francis is that he’s also an insanely hardcore gamer with a wide range of interests. He’s the kind of gamer who thinks the original Dark Souls should have had a second even harder difficulty setting, but who also unabashedly keeps a Yoshi plushy on his desk. An all-around great and talented guy, I recommend him very highly.

When Francis joined the team at Avalanche he had worked in film but didn’t have experience working with videogames, which is always a slight risk - but he took to it like a duck to water! He quickly became a huge asset to the team owing to his extraordinary ability to work with melee combat, which in my experience, is always very challenging. Francis is a very talented animator; both a very solid key-framer and motion editor who has a great understanding of how much of the mocap to maintain and where to re-time and re-pose. He created some truly impressive anims which were thrilling to be involved with. Francis is also an absolute pleasure to work with, he has a very easy going personality. I looked forward to reviewing his anims because of his passion and determination to make everything both look and play well. He is an avid gamer (to sadistic levels!), which I believe really influenced and benefitted his animations. I truly valued Francis’s opinion on what we were trying to achieve and would always invite him to support me on combat rehearsals and mocap shoots where he gave valuable input. He’s also a keen martial artist himself and would willingly jump into the suit when necessary to ensure that we got exactly what was needed for certain moves. Francis was prepared to do whatever it took to help us nail our objectives because of his love for the project. With his tenacious attitude and high level of talent, Francis grew to be the main ‘go to guy’ for melee combat which is a position of great responsibility. I miss working with Francis and hope our paths cross again in the future… I recommend Francis very highly.
