Research Assistant- Welcoming the Dear Neighbor?

This research is in partnership with the Mapping Prejudice Project. Welcoming the Dear Neighbor? is the title of this research project and the focus was to discover the history of housing discrimination in the surrounding Saint Paul, Minnesota. I spent time analyzing online and digital copies of news papers dating back from 1900 in Ramsey County. I spoke on the work at a community event and interacted with community members on the subject. I also took part in creating a service learning curriculum for a St. Catherine University first year core class on the subject. . . The title comes from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, the founders of St. Kate’s, who claim the love of neighbor without distinction as part of their mission. The question is, has Ramsey County historically been a place that welcomed the dear neighbor regardless of race, and what are the legacies of that history today? Show less

Social Work HEALS Fellowship

The HEALS fellowship provided additional resources and support during my senior field experience in the hospital setting. Participating in this program allowed me to examine how the social work profession interacts with other health professions, the many different roles social workers can assume in this field and how our training is beneficial, and how the social work profession as a whole works with the health care system. I grew as a leader and social worker by asking questions, doing research and networking during my time in the HEALS program. As one of 4 students selected to participate in the Social Work HEALS program at St. Catherine University, I participated in health-care education and training, connected with peers and working professionals in the field, advocated for policy issues, and practiced as members of inter-professional health-care teams. Two undergraduate and two graduate social work students were selected for the 2019-2020 academic year. . . . I worked with an interdisciplinary team to provide emotional and social support resources to a diverse range of patients on multiple medical units. I coordinated discharge planning including referrals to agencies, providing patient advocacy and documentation using the EPIC data system. My main focus during this internship was care coordination and connecting customers with community resources at the time of discharge. I completed supervised and individual initial assessments throughout the hospital to discuss home living situations with customers and families in regard to needs in the community or additional needs such as home care, hospice, transitional care units for rehabilitation and long term care placement. I also assessed/intervened with child and adult protection reports, domestic violence concerns, homelessness, medical equipment or refills needed, insurance questions, made referrals and addressed social situations outside the hospital. Friends for a Non Violent World is a nonprofit organization who has a long history of advocating and teaching methods of non violence. FNVW works primarily with past and present incarcerated individuals and community volunteers. In this position, I coordinated the recruitment, retention, organization, communication, and involvement of volunteers for Friends for a Non-Violent World. Tasks included conducting interviews with volunteers, administering applications, structuring the boarding process, and developing a data analysis tool for tracking volunteers. During this macro focused internship, I learned about organizational structure and was able to pull in my pervious nonprofit experience to create/revise the organization flow chart, position descriptions and volunteer on boarding/retention. During this internship, I also learned how social workers can work with this population from a micro, mezzo and macro focus and the systems that impact this client system such as voting. Show less

The Assistantship Mentoring Program is a unique program at St. Catherine University for students and faculty members to work together in academic areas such as research, teaching, and project assisting. As the student coordinator for AMP, I handled all aspects of the programming coordination for orientation, workshops, general operations, and the fall and spring symposiums. Workshop coordination responsibilities included setting the topics of the workshops, arranging the content, sending email invites, presenting, coordinating with guest presenters, and gathering/recording program reflections. I also had experience in organizing student symposiums where I coordinated with different university departments to book the space, order catering and to advertise the event. For the bi-annual event, I developed a schedule accommodating student requests and an agenda for the two-days of each symposium. As a high school student, I ran the youthrive Cabinet which focused on youth leadership and finding our unique leadership fingerprint while working side by side with adults. The Cabinet consisted of 10-13 students from the Metro Area in grades 7-12. As an organization, we positively impacted communities and created service-learning opportunities on issues we are passionate about. I taught different strategies on how to develop and execute service events. I helped write service learning curriculums and planned the Youth Forum at The Nobel Peace Prize Forum two years in a row. The youthrive Cabinet serves as the decision making body for the organization, therefore I organized materials for meetings, recruited new members and trained the Cabinet on how to become your own unique leader and how to create an impactful, sustainable service project.
