I had the pleasure of working with Francesco in two different companies and he is in my top 2% list of top performer. In short, he is a rocket scientist and a true geek. His background is in Parallel Computation and Internet of Things. However, when we started to work together I've asked to play a role in Image Search and he was able to produce significant improvements by using Machine learning and learning on the job. Later, he applied those skills to many other topics including spelling & alteration, and data generation. Then, he became a platform guy and a great manager able to motivate the team by examples. Frankly, I am missing his skills. Happy to provide more references on demand

Francesco is an excellent developer, with a wide array of skills and capabilities. He engineered excellent solutions for various search algorithm and data mining problems which were prohibiting gold set creation and testing. Search Results improved significantly. He was always helpful and took extra time to properly explain certain methods to me, which was - again - incredibly useful. His creative problem solving skills saved time and redundant work - I really miss working with him, and would not hesitate a second to hire him.

I lead the the News Search Experience team at Bloomberg in London. The focus of the team is on relevance and ranking of news searches; online and offline analytic for both internal and external customers; the experimentation, logs collection and processing; knowledge representation; and, more in general, anything that can get search quality better. The team is a good mix of strong engineers, relevance and machine learning people, and data science experts.

After almost 4 years in a management role, I stepped down and returned being an IC in the newly formed QF Sciences team focusing on incubation projects for both Bing and other divisions of Microsoft that need to power their services and products with the knowledge and the models that we can extract from the web-graph and other sources of information that usually power Bing only.

In August 2010, I become a Lead Software Development Engineer, taking under me the Multimedia Relevance and Classification Project (later on of other 2 projects). My work involves (1) the usage of various machine learning (mostly decision trees and neural networks) for multimedia documents classification and ranking and (2) the processing of multi TB scale datasets for knowledge extraction using different data-mining techniques (mostly variants of hierarchical and k-means clustering). Moreover, I am actively involved, in collaboration with Microsoft Research, in the research of new solution and techniques for the analysis and usage of large scale datasets to be used in multimedia content search with a particular attention to temporal data analysis.

During my work at the Ask.com R&D Office in Pisa, I worked on a variety of different projects. I was involved in both the Image and News search. For the Image Search, my job was to create and write algorithms for the processing and features extraction. For the News Search, I was one of the developers and maintainers of the crawler/extractor for videos.During my work activity in Ask, I wrote a large number of internal tools, many of them to have a 24/7 monitoring and alert of our distributed processing system. Moreover, I was involved into the maintenance of various libraries that I contributed to grow, speed up and correct. These libraries covered various aspects of Ask activities: text processing, communications libraries and full server applications maintenance.Another aspect of my work was the prototyping of new algorithm and features, this involved the building of (simple) web interfaces for the presentation and the analysis of the experimental results.
