  DESIGN OF AN EMBEDDED MICROCONTROLLER ELECTRONIC SYSTEM FOR THE VERTICAL MOVEMENT, UNDER MICROMETRIC CONTROL, OF AN EXCIMER LASER FOR CORNEAL SURGERY BY MEANS OF LINEAR ACTUATORS The linear actuators used to lift the excimer laser are controlled by an embedded electronic system which has a microcontroller architecture, interfaced with a MEMS accelerometer and a laser technology distance sensor. PWM modulation is used to tune the voltage of each actuator, while the self-leveling algorithm is based on a proportional real-time control system, implemented at firmware level with the C programming language. Once the target height of the excimer laser is set via PC, the vertical movement is managed in a completely automatic way by the embedded system, guaranteeing the laser leveling instant by instant, as well as the stop of the actuators when the set height is reached.
