REPAiR (REsource Management in Peri-urban Areas: Going Beyond Urban Metabolism) is a project started in 2016 funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Program. The core objective of REPAiR is to create integrated, place-based eco-innovative spatial development strategies aiming at a quantitative reduction of waste flows in the strategic interface of peri-urban areas. These strategies will promote the use of waste as a resource in six metropolitan “living labs”, following a bottom-up process: Amsterdam (NL), Naples (I), Ghent (BE), Hamburg (D), Łódź (PL), Pécs (HU). With 18 partners, the consortium is rather large for a research project, composed by: scientific institutions; local and regional authorities, and private companies working in the field of innovation. The project is in line with the on-going initiatives of the European Commission towards establishing a strong circular economy and to mitigate the global climate change. REPAiR focuses on peri-urban areas, landscapes characterised by a patchwork of dispersed urbanised areas, agricultural land, open space and high density residential areas within a discontinuous countryside: going beyond the material dimension of waste flows, REPAiR includes in its experimentations the category of Wastescapes that embrace the spatial effects of waste flows on the landscape as well as all the residual spaces scattered in the areas object of the study.
