      Dr. Fiona Blighe joined Science Foundation Ireland as a Scientific Programme Officer in May 2013.Fiona has a background in materials physics and project management. Prior to joining SFI Fiona was Programme Manager for the Centre for Women in Science and Engineering Research (WiSER) in Trinity College Dublin.Fiona carried out four years of postdoctoral research through positions at Dublin City University and Trinity College Dublin. Fiona was awarded an IRCSET EMPOWER fellowship in 2009 to carry out independent research on developing novel sensor materials at the National Centre for Sensor Research, DCU. Prior to this Fiona held a postdoctoral position at CRANN, Trinity College Dublin where she developed high strength nano-composite fibres. Fiona is the author of numerous articles in highly cited peer reviewed international journals, and has presented her work internationally on many occasions. Fiona has acted as a reviewer for the nanoscience and nanotechnology research journal ACS Nano.Fiona’s main research interests include the mechanical and electrical properties of low dimensional materials (particularly carbon nanotubes and graphene), polymer composites and their applications.Fiona holds a PhD in Physics and a degree in Natural Science (Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials) from Trinity College Dublin.

      As the Programme Manager for WiSER I manage and develop initiatives that provide direct support to women researchers and academics in Science, Engineering and Maths in TCD. I work to extend and create sustainability in the WiSER network of female academics and engages with relevant external groups and organisations to promote WiSER and women engaged in scientific research. My interest in the progression of women in academia springs from my previous background as an experimental physicist.       Adaptive Sensors Group, National Centre for Sensor Research, Dublin City University PI Prof. Dermot Diamond. There is an explosive growth in the demand for new sensors in areas such as environmental monitoring, healthcare monitoring and industrial process monitoring. New materials are being sought that will enable miniaturised sensors to be developed with reduced cost, increased accuracy, lower detection limits, rapid response times and a decrease in power consumption. In order to improve on current sensor/actuator technologies, components need to be smaller, more efficient, possess lower detection limits, have faster response times and exhibit both increased toughness and extended lifetimes. The synthesis of new smart materials is a critical requirement if these demands are to be met. My current area of interest is developing arrangements of pseudo one dimensional materials as responsive platforms for sensing applications. These platforms maintain high surface areas while out-performing bulk materials in their ability to respond to changes in their environment.
