I obtained a research scholarship from the HRB in Summer 2016. I was an active member of the research team in the area of dementia. During this project I had the opportunity to be involved in the data collection and analysis of a three round Delphi survey. I received training in Delphi methodology, statistical analysis and developed my writing skills when I participated in the formulation of feedback to Delphi panelists. I learned how to formulate the questionnaire along with setting up, launching and managing surveys in the system. I developed skills in time management and project monitoring by forming deadlines for myself and forming a plan for what I wanted to achieve each week. I learnt how to export data from the survey software into statistical package IBM SPSS Version 21. I received training in SPSS so that I was familiar with the procedures. I worked with my supervisor in analyzing the data and determining the statistical details required to inform the development of the next round questionnaire. This experience allowed me to learn about statistical tests and the most appropriate tests to conduct depending on the data. I was helping in the preparation of feedback to the panelists for round 2.The practice reinforced new experience and knowledge to allow me to hone my skills. I also began writing the report for the round 1 phase of the Delphi which included forming the template, table of contents and slotting in the appropriate sections of the report. I formed the reference list for the literature review section. I learnt about prioritizing information, determining what results are significant and I identified the steps necessary in compiling different parts of the report of a research project. I was also supported in developing an abstract for submission at an undergraduate research day in the college discussing my part in the Delphi study. The whole project advantaged me in terms of my understanding and conduct of research. Show less
