Around 1910 they functioned as blue prints for the new mass medium of cinema in Hollywood, and later Cinecittà. Today, although we do not realize it, our image of ancient Rome is in a way based on scenes presented in Alma-Tadema's paintings.Exhibition design: Paul Toornend / Graphic design: Michaël Snitker / film projections: Studio LouterLeeuwarden, Vienna and London each customized their displays to meet the expectations of their audiences.In cooperation with international researchers on cinema, theatre, art history, (reception of) archaeology and with Hollywood production designer Arthur Max (Gladiator [2000], Exodus: Gods and Kings [2014]), and many others.The accompanying publication (Fries Museum / Prestel / WBOOKS, Dutch, English, German language editions) was written by leading international researchers and experts.The children's book, 'Wonen in een schilderij' (2016) is written by Lida Dijkstra (Dutch and Frisian editions only).Accompanying Film programme with classic block busters like Gli Ultimi Giorni di Pompei, Ben Hur, Gladiator, Exodus: Gods and Kings, etc. Some early films were introduced by experts and accompanied by live music.
