I was one of Fernando's graphic design students at the Art Institute of California. Taking his class was truly inspirational as well as educational, because Fernando is not just a teacher, he's a polished, extremely talented professional in an industry I'd like to get into. His teaching method is unique, in that he runs his classroom like he runs his office - he treats each student as a creative, and sets realistic expectations and standards for the quality of work we produce. Not only does he encourage students to create aesthetically appealing art, but he teaches them to create great designs with great concepts behind them. At the end of the quarter, we were each given the opportunity to present our ad campaigns to various creative directors, art directors, and designers that work with him at Y&R Brands. The experience was extremely gratifying and empowering, and has inspired me to work harder.

      In 1978 at the age of 5 in the Philippines, I started to draw my own comic books because I had stories & adventures in my head that wanted to come out. In 1984, in Michigan I started to read and collect comic books that helped me expand my imagination and creativity. And in 1992, I started art school in Downtown Detroit to learn and hone my craft and eventually start an incredible, amazing and humbling creative career. Then in 2003, at the age of 30 I started to collect inspirational and motivating quotes by extraordinary people; to help me overcome and persevere through this extremely tough and amazing industry (Over 680 quotes to this day, I continue to collect them and be inspired by them). And in 2013 at the age of 40, I had an idea to re-imagine my comic book collection and my collection of quotes into something that I now realize have continued to fuel my creativity, my passion and my drive to be extraordinary. In 2014, I finally started to create my vision and build an art exhibit. And since 2015, I am honored to have introduced 60+ pieces of original art to the public with 10 gallery showings, 3 auction events (Cancer Society of America, “Remember the Music” Alzheimer’s Disease Benefit Concert) and be represented by a prestigious art gallery in Downtown Portland.
