Headed by A/Prof. Andre La Gerche, the laboratory works to investigate athletes’ hearts to advance prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.During time in the lab, Fergus was a key contributor to research analysing acute and chronic cardiac changes in endurance athletes, as well as cardiac impacts of treatments for haematological cancer. This work saw Fergus actively participating in conferences and collaborations across Australia and Europe. Placement in the Muscle Research and Therapeutics Laboratory under Paul Gregorevic and Kevin Watt. Undertook a practicum of ~150 hours with the team examining how a specific signalling pathway controls muscle mass. These studies used molecular biology techniques to inhibit or stimulate specific signalling proteins in a mouse model of a neuromuscular disorder, and biochemical/histological methods to examine the effects on muscle attributes, and gene/protein regulation.
