Cercula are a sustainability consultancy company that aims to make sustainable construction projects easily accessible and viable by taking the hard work of calculating environmental impacts out of the developers’ hands. Through the use of Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), Cercula can use cradle-to-grave analysis to evaluate environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a product or material’s life. The breadth of data included in this assessment is extensive; it includes not only the environmental impact of raw material extraction, but the impact of material processing, manufacture, distribution, and use. Through the use of AI and machine learning, Cercula are developing an explorer that can read a bill of quantities (BoQ) to produce a whole life carbon assessment, embodied carbon and life cycle costing for a project. Cercula’s software takes into account the energy, carbon and financial cost of material manufacturing and additionally the cost of replacement and the lifetime cost of using certain materials. The software can also compare a project to the average house build to show the user the carbon and financial savings they could potentially gain by moving in the direction of a more sustainable project. My role was primarily correcting the errors in the outputs which came from the software being unable to match certain keywords to the correct identification code. I therefore had to learn some construction knowledge to accurately match a material to a code. Entering this placement with minimal knowledge of construction, I had to quickly familiarise myself with the methods and terminology used in construction projects. I also had to apply a fair measure of common sense to breakdown a bill of quantities, to be able to correctly identify when the software produced an error. In addition to my primary role, I also spent some time cataloguing embodied carbon data from EPD documents. Show less
