Research work and master thesis of active thermography methods applying to detect defects in carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) DE: Forschungs- und Masterarbeit zu aktiven Thermografieverfahren zur Fehlererkennung in kohlenstofffaserverstärkten Polymeren (CFK) - Experiments setup of various types of active thermography systems including induction thermography (also known as eddy current thermography), flash thermography, laser scanning thermography. Pulsed and lock-in analysis methods were employed to evaluate both amplitude and phase results. - Simulating analysis of multilayer CFRP with induction heating physics based on COMSOL Multiphysics. Heating anisotropy that happened on a uni-directional CFRP plate is verified and the root of the cause is deduced physically. In this period, I learned knowledge on experimental thermography and material science of CFRP composites. Some of them are very fruitful for me: - Knowledge of the general material science around CFRP: electrical, thermal, and mechanical physics of carbon fibers, polymers, and the composites - CFRP. - Knowledge of the CFRP manufacturing process, area of application, repair methods, and recycling process. This point and point above mainly built me up a view of the object through the whole life cycle and help me understand the reason for a defect in CFRP, which also benefits a lot when the material model is to be built up. - Knowledge and skills on how to manipulate active thermography systems, the interaction of each component, characteristics of different types of coils, and so on. - Build up a more comprehensive methodology to explore a physic phenomenon scientifically and dialectically. * Publication on NDT & E International, 2017, "Anisotropy in carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and its effect on induction thermography" Show less
