PAAS UTS (now AeroSoc) aims to bridge the gap between UTS students and the aerospace industry while developing their technical skills, especially as UTS does not have its own aerospace engineering stream. My role involved leading and coordinating the ‘Spaghetti in Space’ high-altitude balloon (HAB) launch project where the team launched a weather balloon with spaghetti on its payload to an altitude of approximately 23km in Muswellbrook. This consisted of:• Coordinating the HAB team of 11 members through the design, prototype, build and test stages• Preparing for and coordinating the building and testing sessions• Liaising requirements of the launch with external sponsors including NOVA 96.9• Creating sponsorship proposals to raise funds• Preparing for and coordinating the 2-day launch trip at MuswellbrookThe purpose of this project was to expose members to a small space project to emphasise that Australia’s growing aerospace industry is accessible and that the sky is not the limit. This project provided members with the opportunity to build simple design and fabrication skills, organisation skills along with meaningful relationships, which were infrequent considering the pandemic. This project received the 'Event of the Year' award from ActivateUTS, the governing body for UTS clubs, in 2022.
