I've been honored to have Fatih Cansu as my teacher and mentor in various capacities through the first three years of my high school. In the first year (2014-15), he successfully introduced me and my other 23 classmates to Elementary Number Theory and Introductory Programming with JavaScript. With carefully prepared material, I felt that he was always able to diligently execute the classes with a keen balance between rigor and comprehensibility—in both years of his classes I took. In the second year (2015-16), we learned Python with specific focus on mathematical problem-solving under Dr. Cansu’s tutelage. As a novice who was introduced to programming by him, when I wanted to follow up on the opportunities that the CS world was providing to me, Dr. Cansu had never shied away from shouldering the responsibility of mentoring an aspiring student. When the opportunity arose with a national informatics Olympiad being organized at Izmir in December 2016, even though he was not actively instructing me that year, he advised me and 6 other friends to attend the competition, arranged the logistics for our trip, and joined us in our travel. In that weekend-long competition, I received my first Olympiad medal, and my only Olympiad medal in informatics. That weekend and Dr. Cansu’s mentorship still holds a sentimental value for me, and I’m confident that he will go above and beyond to mentor any similar students throughout their introduction to the beautiful world of mathematics and computer science.
