The Second Engineer Officer is responsible to the C/E for the efficient running and maintenance of all technical equipment except Radio and Navigational Aids. In the absence of the C/E the 2nd Engineer will deputize for him on all matters. The 2nd Engineer is directly responsible to the C/E for the supervision of overhauling and repair tasks which is assigned to other Engineer officers He is to assume responsibilities for items and systems of machinery as follows: 1-Main engine and associated equipment 2-Cargo oil pumps and turbines. 3- Sea water pumps, valves and filters. Inert gas plants. 4-Main stripping pumps (overhaul job) Cargo valves and crane hydraulic pumps. 5- Main coolers and condensers. 6-Turbo alternator.
