Expertise SummaryDr Fangying Wang's principal research interests lie in the areas of laboratory testing, numerical modelling and the assessment and development of design rules for high-performance steel and composite steel structures. In particular, her current research focuses on various domains of structural engineering including, but not limited to, local and global stability of stainless steel tubular structures, high strength steel open section structures, and concrete-filled steel tubular structures. She has been leading in research projects on sustainable constructions with green and recycled materials, and structural resilience of steel structures after fire hazards.

My current research topics have extended to the static, cyclic and fire performance of concrete-filled tubular members and high-performance steel open section members. The ongoing research projects at NTU have expanded my knowledge over structural safety field, especially for steel and composite structures under seismic and fire loading scenarios and residual strengths of structures after exposed to fire. I received the most prestige scholarship “Hong Kong PhD Fellowship” given by the Hong Kong Government during my PhD study at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), and I was given the opportunity to have a year-out research visit at Imperial College London (ICL) under the scholarship of “Pilot Scheme”. My PhD research focused on composite structures, especially concrete-filled steel structures. My thesis, “Behaviour and Design of Concrete-filled Double Skin Stainless Steel Members’’ investigates the compressive and flexural performance of concrete-filled double skin stainless steel sections experimentally and numerically. I have designed seven testing programmes and conducted 170 specimen tests in the laboratory at HKU, and I have completed over 2000 numerical simulations employing high-performance computer and python coding at ICL.
