Working from the main medium of music and composition, its boundaries are pushed into the media of theatre and performance. The research project "Shifting Identities" focusses on the idea of abstracting away specific qualities or abilities of the musician's profession, yet at the same time the pieces could only be performed by musicians. The following questions are central for the research: How can a musician be transformed into a theatrical performer by reducing, denying, absorbing and adapting, or taking away essential elements of musical performance? As an opposite strategy to the expansive approach (the introduction of new performative elements and tasks besides making music), the research proposes a reductive approach. By not being able to use specific aspects of his profession the musician is transformed into a theatrical performer. By leaving away the instrument for example, the focus of the audience changes, and the concept of what a musician is on the one hand, and on the other hand what the profession of this person on stage actually is, is challenged. This absence of specific elements of musical profession makes it possible for the audience to fill in this 'emptied space' with imagination, interpretation and meaning. Is the person on stage a musician, an actor, a mime, a dancer? What is a musician? What is the familiar understanding of a musician as he is seen by the audience, and how does the musician understand his own profession? How is this understanding challenged by the research, both artistically and theoretically?
