Research Topic: What Keeps a Refugee Girl in Secondary School? Insights on Motivational Factors from Girls in Dadaab Refugee Camp Building on the existing body of literature on academic motivation, the dissertation examined the most frequent and significant individual and social factors associated with the academic motivation of secondary school girls living in Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya. Notably, refugee girls are the most marginalised group in the world when it comes to school participation. Acknowledging the multiplicity of barriers refugee girls encounter in different contexts is crucial, but it may make it easy to overlook the factors that motivate them to persist and succeed in education. The research used a qualitative method where in-depth interviews were conducted with ten girls who recently completed their secondary education in various Kenyan schools. Based on the findings, competition-based education systems, support from teachers and mothers, and aspirations of spatial mobility (resettlement in countries of high income) are central to influencing motivation. This dissertation is relevant for all stakeholders working in refugee education as guidelines for improving refugee girls’ motivation. I approached my research using an optimistic lens. I have discovered that there is also a need to move away from the deficit-oriented paradigm that prioritises girls' vulnerability regarding education participation. If development initiatives capitalise on ‘what is working for girls’, it could equally result in a significant impact

African Women Leadership Conference Participant
-
Mar 2018 - Mar 2018
• Being an outstanding scholar mentor, I was nominated to represent Equity Leaders Scholars in a first-of-its-kind convening of some of the most influential voices in African women’s leadership—from education and politics, health, and technology, entertainment, and the law. • Organized by Wellesley College in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation, this timely and important conference expound my understanding of the many ways women leaders are transforming their communities and their nations; through thought leadership. I had an opportunity to learn from the women who are making a difference not only across Africa but around the world. In lectures, breakout sessions, and informal discussions, I explored what women’s leadership looks like through the lens of four key leadership competencies—confidence, creativity, courage, and resilience—leading to a deeper appreciation of the challenges African women leaders face and the productive strategies for addressing them.
