Biological Science Technician - Plants

Jun 2023 - Aug 2023
I worked as a student trainee on the botany crew this summer. This job counted as an internship for my conservation degree. This job required me to be able to hike long distances (on average 4-8 miles) and be knowledgeable of both native and invasive plants in the area. In this role, I: - Conducted plant surveys that involved looking for rare and/or invasive plants to the area according to maps on a tablet, using the FieldMaps app - Manually removed invasive plants using a horihori tool and bagging them - Used orange “invasive species” tape to flag areas with large populations of invasive plants, which most commonly were bull thistle, Canada thistle, cheatgrass, spotted knapweed, and St. Johnswort - Used pink and blue “rare species” tape to flag areas with rare plants - Cleaned seeds for habitat restoration using a sieve - Edited notes on mapped areas, updating the status of an invasive species area - Protected the endangered species Tahoe Yellow Cress by fencing areas off that had it and putting informational signs on the fence posts for the public to read - Determined what species a plant was using a Jepson manual (known as "keying out plants") Show less
