Roozbeh Farahbod
I've known Mr. Faraz Ahmed since June 2012 when I accepted his application for a Bachelor thesis under my supervision at SAP Research in Karlsruhe, Germany. The topic of his thesis was on investigating performance-influencing factors in query processing time of SAP HANA database engine. During his time at SAP Research, Mr. Ahmed was very diligent and conscientious at his work and what he delivered at the end was beyond an ordinary Bachelor thesis. His thesis work was a combination of research, systematic experimentation, analysis, and development as needed to support the other activities. He researched the topic and related work, defined a set of goals and questions from which a set initial experiments were defined, and developed the tools needed to perform the experiments. Finally, he provided an analysis of the results with respects to the defined goals and questions.

I wrote my thesis at SAP’s laboratories “SAP Research” on the topic “Investigating performance-influencing factors in SAP HANA query-processing”. I contributed towards the performance engineering on SAP's recently released system: SAP HANA. I observed the performance behavior of the system under certain conditions by concentrating on factors in the structure of the SQL query (e.g. number of columns selected, number/order of joins, aggregations, order-by/ group-by/where clause) and the data size. So to perform systematic tests, I also developed a query Generator in Java that offers an easy to handle tool for generating queries concerning performance points. I then performed experiments and conclusively, I analyzed and validated the information.
