Dan Miller
Steve Smith is one of the country’s leading experts on risk management for outdoor and experiential education programs. I had the honor of working with Steve on virtual risk management course for the Association of Experiential Education and was immediately impressed with his ability to take complex legal and ethical concepts and present them in a straightforward and accessible manner. His work is just as relevant and helpful for field staff in the trenches as it is for managers, board members, and company executives. In addition to being an expert in his field, Steve is a kind and helpful person who is generous with his time. In addition to his substantial time spent doing board and committee work as a volunteer, he has also served as a mentor to me as I delved into the business of risk management consulting. I have heard him say many times that ‘a rising tide lifts all ships’ and it is undeniable that our entire industry is better off because of Steve’s tireless efforts to help us run safer and more effective outdoor programs.

Steve and I met as colleagues in 2009. I was quickly impressed with his ability to relate to and connect with people across social and professional contexts. Over the years of our professional friendship, Steve has demonstrated time and again that he can blend leadership, integrity, and humility in equal measures. His deep knowledge and passionate enthusiasm for the field of adventure risk management have earned him considerable praise from his contemporaries, several leadership and governance appointments with prominent national adventure education organizations, and in 2019, the Outward Bound USA John McGrory Safety Award. Steve is an exemplar in his field—a consummate professional whose enthusiasm is exceeded only by his good judgment and reason—I enthusiastically endorse him.
