My experience at Schroeder truly opened my eyes to what a career as a teacher will be like. Rewarding, exciting, stressful, and time consuming. I collaborated with a phenomenal staff that allowed me to discover how to work with a group that varies in personalities, age, and experience. I had the opportunity to discover what kind of teacher I would like to be, what classroom management techniques work for me, and how I would create a classroom community. •Implemented an individual learning and behavior plan for a struggling student; the student soon after became motivated to produce better quality work. •Successfully introduced new classroom management techniques. •Discovered insight into the work done by the reading specialist and the ESL/ELL teacher. •Tracked an ELL student throughout the semester to collect data and create a case study. •Corresponded with parents through email, newsletters, and parent teacher conferences. •Evaluated student progress to complete report cards with grades and observational comments. •Participated in staff meetings, collaboration, NCA committee work, and professional development. •Organized and executed the donation and drop off of books to a school in need. • Nov 2013 - Dec 2015

When I began at Merry Mill in November of 2013, I worked in the Level 3 classroom with children ages 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 years of age. Beginning in the fall of 2014, I began working in the Level 4 classroom (children ages 3 1/2 - 4 1/2). In both classrooms, I assisted the lead teacher in the daily routine and implementing of activities. During nap time, the lead teacher and I sit down to go over the next days activities and projects. We discuss new ideas and how to make the transition between activities more meaningful and easy for the children. Though so young, the children are incredibly smart and able to pick up on everything, so we would like to make every minute meaningful to the students. I am constantly engaged with parents and caregivers;some scenarios required me to sit down with parents and have a discussion on the child's behavior, progress, and need's. I have explained procedures and goals and provided them with ideas to promote learning and appropriate behavior outside of our classroom. During the summer of 2015, I worked as the lead teacher in the Level 5 classroom twice a week (preschool age children). However, during the summer the center often allows school age children to return, ranging the age of children in my classroom. I created lessons and activities that would be varied and developmentally appropriate for all. This 3 month long experience was extremely eye-opening and beneficial. I used this time to reflect on my practices and classroom management skills. In my final months, I worked as the teaching assistant in the Level 5 classroom alongside the lead teacher. During quiet rest time, I discuss ideas and practices with the experienced lead teacher. The afternoon was my time to lead the classroom in the daily routine and through various activities planned by both myself and the teacher. Show less

    • Pre-Student Teacher
      • Sep 2014 - Dec 2014

During my semester long pre-student teaching experience at Atwood Elementary school in the L'Anse Creuse Public School District, I learned a great deal about my teaching style and slowly evolving philosophy. I entered the kindergarten classroom I was placed into nervous and extremely excited; though I have had a great deal of experiences working with children, this was my first experience working in a real classroom and designing lessons that would actually be implemented. It was a remarkable experience. Alongside with my mentor teacher, I administered evaluations (reading, writing, math, and more) and I familiarized myself with Michigan state standards and district goals. Mid-way through the semester, I sat in on Parent-Teacher conferences and spoke with parents about my educational experiences and about their child. With this in mind, I often spoke with parents about daily occurrences, children's needs, and positive moments their child's day. On a daily basis I worked with all the children during large group lessons, as well as with smaller groups of children on a teacher directed activity. After learning about the children's learning styles, I created and implemented interactive lesson plans that were also aligned with Common Core State Standards and District goals. I also created a case study based on one student; I created a behavior program specifically for this child and followed through with its implementation. I participated in school events such as Book Night, Book Fair, Halloween parties, and the Fun Run. Show less

    • Camp Counselor/Leader
      • 2010 - May 2014

I have been in the organization from childhood and still actively participate throughout different aspects of the organization. Starting in the summer of 2010 I helped out at the two week summer camp where I worked with the children daily. The fall after that I became the head leader of the youngest group of children(ages 4-7) that met weekly. For these meetings throughout the academic year, I did all the planning, researching, and organizing, as well as running the meetings. I continued in this position till the spring of 2013. I continued to help out at the summer camps in 2011 and 2012. During the summer of 2013 I decided to take the leap and be the head camp counselor at the summer camp; this experience was EXTREMELY rewarding and educational. I actively worked and communicated with the parents before camp and during. I planned the daily schedule from morning to night and met weekly with the rest of my staff to assign duties and responsibilities. It was an amazing experience that strengthened my passion for working with children. The fall after that, I worked with the slightly older girls (ages 7-11) as head leader during the weekly meetings (similar to my previous position but with an older age group). I currently am not working in a leadership position, but am constantly offering advice and communicating with the current leader. Show less

Working with customers and clients on a daily basis was an excellent way to strengthen my communication, problem solving, mediating, ability to manage stressful situations, and so many other skills. When extremely busy, it was vital to stay calm and in control; to have a mental checklist that is being constantly thought over while running around from table to table to table is necessary. I also often assisted in and completed the training of new workers.
