I am an aquatic ecologist who is striving to understand how the earth’s changing climate and anthropogenic activities affect multitrophic freshwater communities. In particular, I am interested in how bacterial communities respond to warming in landscapes with different connectivity and want to understand how microbes are impacted by these interacting forces in comparison to higher trophic levels.

Teaching Assistant for BIOL 205 (Comparative Invertebrate Zoology) – 2020Q (taught online)• Led weekly labs twice a week (40 students per session) using Collaborate Ultra program. During labs co-led introductory review of concepts and new material with students in an interactive manner. • Ensured whether the material was understood by checking break out groups and asking clarifying questions about invertebrate anatomy and functions, and providing simplifying explanations and giving analogies to break down difficult concepts • Created and used online games (e.g. Jeopardy) to help students learn difficult terminology in an interactive mannerBelow you can find my student evaluations. Some of the student's feedback comments are provided below:"Evgeniya was super passionate about the material that was covered. She was also super kind and helpful when answering questions I had. Overall I believe she was a great TAand would recommend to other students.""Evgeniya was always very helpful whenever my group had questions and always explained things in a way that made sense and heightened my understanding of the subject athand. She was also very cheery, which made me happy too and was always respectful.""Jane was such a sweetheart and was very confident in her knowledge which made me feel more confident in her knowledge. I was never afraid to ask questions or anythingbecause Jane was always so happy to help. I really appreciate all the work that she put into making this lab so great and I think she did an amazing job, I hope I get to have her asa TA again and hopefully meet her soon!""She was well prepared and very easy to understand, further, she encouraged students to find the answers themselves without them feeling silly." Teaching Assistant for BIOL 326 (Experimental Invertebrate Biology):• Organized and lead weekly labs and field trips for 26 undergraduate students• Prepared R workshops to familiarize students with the program and taught how to run statistical analyses and create graphs • Taught students the application of the scientific method in experimental design, assisted with the design of individual projects and provided guidance with manuscript writing

    • Graduate Teaching Assistant
      • Sep 2019 - Dec 2019

Teaching Assistant for BIOL 205 - Comparative Invertebrate Zoology. This course is an introduction to the diversity and evolutionary history of invertebrates.• Led weekly labs twice a week for 40 students per session• Followed established course outline to prepare lessons and convey subject helping students with the understanding of the material • Teaching aspects involved overview of the material, some memory card games and activities designed to help students with the material• Assisted students with invertebrate dissections followed by conceptual questions about anatomy and associated functions and oral quizzes at the end of each lab Show less

      • May 2018 - Aug 2018

Part of a big multidisciplinary study at UBC “Metabolic scaling of biomass and ecosystemfunction in metacommunities” Technical experience: • Aid in organization of the field samplings, associated preparations and sample collection execution • Collection of benthic and pelagic sediments from freshwater lakes (using VanDorn, Ekman grab, plankton tow)• Chlorophyll extraction (both acetone method and Fluoroprobe, concentrationestimation(using spectrophotometer) • Collection and fixation of zooplankton, phytoplankton, periphyton and bacterial samples• Microbial counts (FlowCytometry) • Measurements of oxygen flux in the system (YSI meter measurements) • Estimation of nutrient concentrations (in situ, using fluorometer) Show less

    • Undergraduate Research Assistant
      • May 2016 - Apr 2018

Conducting research in the Leander lab at UBC. One area of research in the lab is characterization of broad patterns of convergent evolution associated with miniaturization of animal body forms and how different lineages of marine meiofauna interact with (usually) microscopic organisms living in the same environment. My research focuses on the understudied phylum of Kinorhyncha, marine invertebrates found in sand and mud sediments across the globe. Research involves exploration of kinorhynch diversity in British Columbia, species description (using microscopy and molecular techniques), studies of behaviour and their ecologySome skills/techniques:- Collection of marine sediment - Extraction of meiofauna from the sediments - Glassware sterilization - Media preparation - DNA extraction - PCR - Gel-electrophoresis - Molecular purification - Cloning - Restriction Digestion - Microscopy (LM, SEM) - Microphotography - Preparation of visual plates and diagrams Show less

This internship is a collaboration with Stewardship Centre for British Columbia (SCBC) and TransCoastal Adaptations Centre for Innovation for Nature-Based Solutions (TCA) to develop a field monitoring protocol for Green Shores® for Homes. Green Shores for Homes (GSH) is a voluntary program that aims to minimize the impact of residential shoreline development on nearby ecosystems by relying on nature-based solutions and proper management. The program targets both freshwater and marine environments in British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Washington state. The program participation is advantageous as it benefits both homeowners and the environment by preserving residential properties and nature through the restoration of natural processes, enhancement of habitats, pollution reduction and more. During this internship, my primary goal is to create a monitoring protocol for GSH participants to establish baselines and to assess, evaluate and measure the long-term effectiveness of the program in Nova Scotia and British Columbia on local ecosystems and its inhabitants.
