I completed a two week vacation placement at Dentons and took part in various networking events in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. I attended a call with Claire Armstrong (Scotland's Managing Partner) where I learned about the polycentric culture, client mix and Dentons' values. I also attended various calls relating to CSR initiatives, innovation, legal tech and diversity & inclusion. I spent my first week in the Banking Team in Glasgow and learned a lot about the transactions commonly entered into by borrowers and lenders. I gained an understanding of how legal advisors have to carry out checks on borrowers and lenders to ensure their clients are entering suitable transactions. I completed company search reports, read many facility agreements, attended CP checklist meetings, drafted utilisation requests and learned about the representations and undertakings within facility agreements. I also researched conditions precedent and conditions subsequent to gain a strong understanding of these terms and their significance in Banking law. I sat in the Real Estate Team in Edinburgh for the second week of my placement. I assisted trainees with chaser emails, helped to register deeds in the books of council and session and drafted cover letters. I also edited a draft lease for a license to occupy and created a case summary of a recent Property Law case in Scotland. Show less

I completed a two week vacation placement at Pinsent Masons in their Glasgow Office. I was exposed to the welcoming and friendly culture of everyone at the firm and was made to feel very welcome through various social events and networking opportunities. I attended a video call with John Cleland (Managing Partner) and learned about the international growth of Pinsent Masons and the importance of being a purpose-led law firm. Throughout the placement, I attended more presentations on Pinsent Masons' Sustainability commitments, Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives and a talk on How Law Firms Make Money. I sat in the Restructuring team for my two week placement and was involved in a range of legal work relating to restructuring and insolvency law. I took part in team meetings and was made to feel very welcome throughout my time in the team. My work included researching points of difference in insolvency procedures between Scots and English law, working through a case study for my supervisor, using doc compare software to review a change in documents, updating precedents on the different kinds of liquidation, researching the correct procedure for resignation of administrators, assisting with a security review, drafting a deed of release, drafting an amendment letter and researching and summarising the key cases on restructuring plans since 2020. I also reached out to other Pinsent Masons' employees out with my department and arranged meetings with a Legal Director in the Advanced Delivery Team, a Senior Associate in the Corporate Team, and two employees who had experience of the secondment opportunities offered by the firm. I completed a one week vacation placement in TLT's Glasgow office (first net-zero office in Glasgow). Aside from attending launch events for the new office and getting to experience TLT's welcoming and inclusive culture, I carried out various legal tasks. I spent the week with the Real Estate department, working with both the Commercial Property and Clean Energy teams. I created various break reports relating to commercial leases and also reviewed a group of leases when identifying rent review dates and change of control issues for a partner. I also assisted on a number of renewable energy projects, mainly for developers looking to build battery sites. I carried out searches to determine the correct owners of different areas of land and learned about the various stages of real estate transactions. I helped to request documents for option sites and researched specific points of law. I also reached out to a Legal Director in the Corporate Team to find out more about the work they do. Throughout the week, I also networked with various people in the firm and met with John Woods, the Managing Partner. I attended specialist presentations on licensing, clean energy, employment and construction. In addition to this, I researched the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals and took part in a group presentation on how these goals link to TLT. Show less
