For 2 months I worked in Santiago in the architecture department in the head offices of TECHO, a housing charity based in South America. During that time I also spent a week working in ‘campamentos’ (slum areas) in La Sarena in the north of Chile, where we were building houses and providing more adequate living conditions for people living in poverty. In the office I worked on a numerous different projects. This included proposing an idea for an interactive monument for an up coming housing project in Antofogasta. I also had to devise a scheme for community involvement as often when families are being moved out of the ‘campamentos’ and into housing there are multiple different sites that could be chosen, TECHO wanted to come up with a scheme so that the community would have a say in where they were living. The ideas I put forward are now going to be implemented in future projects. Following this, TECHO are now working with Architecture firm Elemental and the Chilean government on semi-complete self build social housing. Elemental have been designing and building houses like this for the past 10 years, however they have now teamed up with TECHO to tackle the social side of housing in a different way - working out how to foster communities and improve the already successful schemes. I was tasked with suggesting what possible problems may occur during both the technical process and the social side of things and coming up with solutions to these problems. Finally I also worked on Photoshop and Sketchup to produce renders of different housing schemes that were being worked on in the office. Show less

Throughout my second year at University, I took part in the mentoring scheme run by the RIBA. This involved being partnered up with a firm in Manchester and visiting the firm every month or so. This experience gave me a valuable insight into how an architecture firm is run. Throughout my second year at University, I took part in the mentoring scheme run by the RIBA.
