I lead the Urban Nature Campaign for UK Youth For Nature, a youth led organisation focused on mobilising and empowering young people to seek and call for decisive action on nature and wildlife in the UK. Launched in 2023, the Urban Nature campaign calls for the restructure our cities so that they function for the needs of both people and nature. As part of the campaign, I am organising the organisation’s inaugural ‘Urban Nature festival’. The event aims to provide a fun creative space to build community and capacity within our youth base whilst highlighting the abundance of living organisms we can find on our doorstep, even within the most hostile built-up environments. My role involves creating a new education and environmental programme to be rolled out to local schools and community groups. The program aims to re-connect local groups to the river Lea and the ecology it supports, as well as provide an enhanced learning experience outside the classroom. As part of this role, I also work with community volunteers two days a week to survey wildlife in the area and restore/improve local habitat, restoring a sense of ownership on the local environment in the community. I researched themes around butterfly habitat and population trends over the last 200 years and communicated these to a wide range of different audiences aross various events. This included hosting Zoology Live! the Museums annual educational programme, hosting a series of talks from butterfly researchers and running a variety of family events with the Wildlife Trust BCN.
