To err is human, also in health care. Whenever a patient safety incident occurs, the first and most important victim is the patient and his/her family. Unfortunately, the patient is not the only party suffering from a patient safety incident. The event can also impact the involved health professional, which is referred to as the “second victim”. Second victims can suffer on both professional and personal level. This may lead in turn to further adverse impact on other patients and members of the healthcare organization.
