The focus of my research is the study of III-V semiconductors for emission in the mid-infrared range with the ultimate goal of making LEDs to be used in gas detection. The study has covered a number of material structures to find the best performing system: InSb/InAs quantum dots, InAsSb/InAs quantum wells (QWs), InAsSb/InAlAs QWs and InSb/InAlSb QWs.This work has required me to perform a broad and deep literature analysis, band diagram simulations, MBE growth of samples, LED processing in the cleanroom and material and devices characterisation trough XRD, photoluminescence, I-V, electroluminescence and power measurements. The results of the studies have been presented through talks either to academics in national and international conferences and to the general public in a divulgative manner. Worked under the NATO project "Uncooled Terahertz arrays for imaging explosives" performing two main tasks: • Simulations carried out with the CrysMAS software developed by the Crystal Growth laboratory of the Fraunhofer Institute to improve the solid-liquid interface during growth in a Vertical Gradient Furnace (VGF) • CdZnTe crystals characterization: - X-ray diffracction (XRD) - X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) - Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy Worked under the NATO project "Uncooled Terahertz arrays for imaging explosives" performing two main tasks: • Simulations carried out with the CrysMAS software developed by the Crystal Growth laboratory of the Fraunhofer Institute to improve the solid-liquid interface during growth in a Vertical Gradient Furnace (VGF) • CdZnTe crystals characterization: - X-ray diffracction (XRD) - X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) - Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy

I acted as researcher in the IOM CNR laboratory during 4 months for my undergraduate thesis. My tasks involved MBE growth of self assembled GaAs nanowires, Hall and photoluminescence measurements.
