      I investigated the effect of a magnetic field on the parametric coupling of a laser pump in plasma. I derived dispersion relations for the pump wave in a cold, homogeneous plasma, which I solved numerically using python. I presented my results at the 59th Annual Meeting of the APS Division of Plasma Physics Milwaukee, October 2017 and at the LLNL summer poster session.       My undergraduate research projects involved designing a device to measure the light yield of water-based liquid scintillator (for use in the THEIA neutrino experiment), calibrating photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) for the ANNIE neutrino experiment, and data analysis for the same. Using root, I characterised PMT after-pulsing, allowing this source of background to be distinguished from true events. I also took online shifts at Fermilab to monitor the functionality, progress, and data acquisition of the ANNIE experiment. I have attained an excellent understanding of the operation of many components of electrical hardware which are integral to particle physics experiments, and the experimental techniques used to test and calibrate them.

      I was a summer intern at the Central Laser Facility in Rutherford Appleton Laboratories (27th July - 25th September 2015) under the supervision of Dr. Raoul Trines. During my placement, I conducted research into the growth of filamentation in wakefields, and made several exciting discoveries, which I presented at the 58th Annual Meeting of the APS Division of Plasma Physics in San Jose, October 2016. My results are being written up for publication. My responsibilities involved running simulations on the SCARF supercomputer using the PIC (particle in cell) code, OSIRIS. In order to analyse my data, I wrote scripts in IDL which calculated Fourier transforms, reduced the effect of noise and plotted key data. I then observed the effects produced by changes in specific initial conditions. This placement was a fantastic experience which allowed me to participate in and contribute to a research environment, enriched my knowledge of physics and the scientific method, and provided a unique opportunity to learn and apply essential programming and data analysis skills.
