I have developed courses teaching Critical Studies to emerging Arts and Media students. The curriculum involves engagement with historical and contemporary issues and their impact on society, local, nationally and internationally. Through the lens of visual communication, students research manifold issues and document their findings, views and value systems via the agency of words to juxtapose with their visual practices. As creative thinker I employed my knowledge and experiences in the many courses I developed and taught as a Subject Director for the School of Design, College of Creatives Arts, Massey University, New Zealand. A sample of courses includes: Art Direction, which taught students to observe their visual world through the method of semiotics - Rapid Ideation, employed quick fire thinking through multiple briefs - Urban Camouflage, encouraged students to investigate and re-think/imagine city spaces using real world briefs and pop up campus in commercial locations - Social Change, connected marketing and design students together to explore societal 'wicked' problems.Teaching has fine tuned my expertise and knowledge around identification of audience and communication substance.I am still involved in academic, communication and behavioural research and a board member of the international WHAM Research network.
