Exeter Law Review Staff Reviewer
-
Oct 2022 - Aug 2023
As a staff reviewer, I am sent law papers from some of the best the University of Exeter Law School has to bring and am responsible for reviewing the quality of them to ensure they are of the requisite quality for the Exeter Law Review. This not only allows me to give back to the University of Exeter but allows me to learn from students who are at the top of their classes and remain well versed and up to date with unique areas of law that arise.

Pro Bono Access to Justice Volunteer
-
Jun 2022 - Aug 2023
This incredible role, set up by the Access to Justice Clinic in Exeter, allows those who cannot afford legal representation to have the ability to talk to law students about their legal issues and provided with legal guidance/advice surrounding their issues'. From having virtual meetings with clients, researching into the law surrounding their issues, working in a pair to balance the work-load, to filling out advice letters and time-sheets, this role threw me into what the real world of law can be like. University of Exeter Law Society Mooting Officer
-
May 2021 - Jun 2022
This role required me to lead the mooting competitions for the academic year starting 2021. My main goals for this role was to allow students to explore lesser-known areas of law - that they would not usually be able to study in their degrees. I wanted to ensure that everyone can contribute into the topic of the moot, and ensure that this mooting year is unlike anything that has come before. It was different, insightful, and enjoyably difficult. This was achieved by setting up specific events for students to come forward with any ideas they had, which had not been done before, which resulted in changes to the topics of the moots, external competitions being supported, and rebuttals being introduced into the final of the moot competition - which had not been done within mooting before at the University of Exeter Law Society. This role also required me to work along side the other co-mooting officer, which was extremely fun; allowing both of our ideas to be merged into one and, not only aid us on our journey into law but, to aid many others into their own path into law. We did this in a number of ways, continually pushing each other to go that little bit further - resulting in a hybrid mooting competition with BAME judges to push for more diversity for students to benefit from. The University of Exeter Law Society also won Best Society of the Year Overall, and Best Society for Wellbeing which are both achievements I am proud to have been a part of and contributed to. President of the Exeter Media Watch Society
-
May 2021 - Jun 2022
From being one of the founding members of this society, and working as the Head Editor last year, I have displayed my upmost enthusiasm for this incredible society. As president, I will be tasked with overseeing the society as a whole and, with our new found affiliation, increasing the exposure of the society. My main goals for this coming academic year will be to: increase numbers, start a podcast on misinformation in the media, and create some form of merchandise to create a sense of community and togetherness - which is well needed in such a time as the pandemic today. The main goal of the society is to inform people of the power of misinformation in the media, and help reduce its spread - which is especially important in such a bubble as university. This year is going to be amazing for this society, and will be in the best shape for it to be passed on when the current committee and myself graduate. From attending my first mediation, to working through a complex and detailed trust case, this mini pupillage taught me how important building rapport is with clients while also showing me that cases can have a large cross-over of legal issues. I very much enjoyed learning from Magdalen Chambers and adding to my knowledge of the bar. I spent two days in Whitestone Chambers where I was taught how to create a Counsel Attendance Form, prepare a case summary, and write a Skeleton Argument worthy of such an esteemed Chamber that is Whitestone Chambers. From working on Road Traffic Incidents, to GDPR related cases, I can honestly say that I have learned so much about what the busy lifestyle of a London Barrister can be like. I am excited to come back for a week-long mini pupillage in the near future and be able to contribute again to becoming a better Barrister to be. Show less

I attended a mini pupillage with South Square chambers, supervised by Jamil Mustafa. From being able to attend a live case, to having the opportunity to write my first legal case evaluation, I found this experience invaluable and am very grateful for all of those in South Square that were so helpful in allowing me to learn from them and the long hours that is required of London based barristers in insolvency and commercial practice. This event comprised of barristers within property law explaining what the life within Tanfield is like. I found this most interesting as it showed me how intense the workload can be within London practice and how different the lives of barristers practicing in different areas of law are. I am grateful to those in Tanfield for this opportunity. This event comprised of barristers within property law explaining what the life within Tanfield is like. Oct 2021 - Oct 2021
I completed an in-person mini pupillage with No 18 Chambers. This taught me a tremendous amount about the reality of being a barrister, from the long hours to the amount of negotiation required outside of the court room. This exposed me to the type of advocacy required in Family Law based cases, the existence of Guardians in child based cases, and the increasing importance of dash cams in road incidents. I learned so much from this week, and understand more about the life of a barrister. I cannot thank those who allowed me to shadow them enough. Show less

Virtual Vacation Scheme Student

Jul 2021 - Jul 2021
I attended a week long event that staged both solicitors and barristers who spoke about the areas of law they work in, are interested in, and how they became the lawyers that they are today. From tax law, AI and the future of law, sustainability and the law etc. the event really worked amazingly to replace vacation schemes during the pandemic. I now truly feel as though I understand much more how solicitors live and work, and the vast amount of areas of law that there are/are going to be. I attended a virtual mini pupillage event with Kings Chambers - intended to be a substitute for students wishing to take a mini pupillage during the Covid-19. The extremely insightful day lasted for five and a half hours and housed different members of Kings Chambers discussing their role in the Chamber, their day-to-day lives, and their journey to the bar. This taught me more about the lifestyle of a Barrister, specifically the challenges that come with being self-employed. I really enjoyed this virtual mini pupillage, and feel as though I have grown as a law student from it. Show less

This was set up to act as a substitute for in person mini pupillages, for students seeking experience in the bar during Covid-19. The virtual mini pupillage lasted for a day, and consisted of Barristers discussing their lives in Chambers, covering specifically the difference between working in an inner city, compared to working in a local chamber. This, I found extremely insightful, as it gave me the opportunity to explore the different type of bar options available. I found this event unique, helpful, and encouraging, and am very proud to have been given the opportunity to learn from East Anglian Chambers. Show less

Judicial Shadowing
-
Feb 2020 - Feb 2020
I successfully applied to shadow two judges in the Crown and County Courts in Exeter, and such allowed me to take in the stressful and admirable atmosphere that judges and Barristers are so accustomed to. Not only did it allow me to see more of the court than a public gallery cannot provide but, it also allowed me to speak to the judge on a one-on-one basis. This was invaluable.
