Redox-flow batteries for remote island communities The redox flow battery is a cheap energy storage solution, which can incorporate environmentally benign redox couples offering safer, more sustainable alternatives to conventional lead-acid batteries. Fuel cells convert chemical energy from a fuel - typically hydrogen and oxygen - into electricity leaving only water as a byproduct. Both of these energy storage and conversion solutions require catalysts, which speed up the processes happening at their electrodes, increasing efficiency. The project involved the synthesis of catalytic electrospun nanofibres and a variety of nanoparticles to be used as catalysts in sustainable energy solutions. Show less
