Obesity and related metabolic diseases increase the risk of diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Obesity develops when a persistent imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure occurs. While white adipose tissue (WAT) is involved in energy storage, brown adipose tissue (BAT) dissipates energy as heat due to its unique expression of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1). The prevalence of brown fat in humans is dominantly influenced by ambient temperature. This plasticity resembles the murine beige adipocytes, which have different developmental origin compared with the classical brown adipocytes. Although many genetic studies point to the close association between beige adipocyte population and metabolic benefits in adiposity and insulin sensitivity in both rodents and humans, whether beige adipocytes indeed alter organismal metabolic behaviors via either thermogenic or non-thermogenic functions has not been determined.
