Back in 2016 I had the opportunity to met Esteban as part of the volunteers who participated in the International Sustainable Cities Congress (CICS), organized by the Green Building Council Costa Rica, UNEP and the World Resources Forum. Esteban and I were part of a team of architects and designers who were supporting the organization and who were also fully involved in solving daily challenges in order to keep a high performance. Esteban showed back then a special leadership and a really open and professional way to share with other colleagues his knowledge. He showed a remarkable and a great attitude all the time and he was always ready for the team and the demands we were facing in order to successfully run the event.

Experience

    • Technical advisor
      • Jul 2016 - Present

In my current position, I coordinate the technical area of the organization, as well as some administrative functions. The main technical aspect involves the management of the EDGE Certification (a fast-growing green building standard) in Costa Rica, monitoring the work of the EDGE auditors and commanding the project certification process. An important part is that -as GBCCR oversees the education side of EDGE-, I am also the trainer in the EDGE Auditors and Experts courses in the country, with almost 100 professionals trained to this point. I have also been involved in the development of an online course in Spanish for the USGBC platform, as well as the creation of an update and reaccreditation course for existing Auditors. My field of action also extends to the promotion and dissemination of the LEED certification system, of which I am a LEED Green Associate and I expect to achieve soon an AP accreditation. Besides certification systems, my work involves managing an adequate record of the Green Building Council information and making presentations for activities and forums, with the purpose of disseminate sustainability as a standard to follow in the building industry. When I am assigned this rule, I am also the speaker in some of these forums. Other tasks include making articles and assisting in a monthly newsletter. I also take part in the organization of the International Congress of Sustainable Cities (CICS), and the events for the World Green Building Week, among other functions that I am assigned. Show less

I aided in the "World Resources Forum for Latin American and the Caribbean and the International Sustainable Building Congress 2016-Second Green Fair". Among the tasks performed there include: taking notes of the conferences held in the event (for the written report and memory of the event), providing guidance to assistants and speakers, in addition to helping the exhibitors. In this company, I performed two different positions. Initially, I aided in making architectural and structural plans of the projects, as well as some requested renderings. Later, I became the "architect on site" for three projects: the remodeling of a university cafeteria, the remodeling of conference rooms and hallways of an important chain hotel and the construction of a private house. Among the tasks that were entrusted to me, are: staff management, materials and equipment organization and coordination, and the quality check for the work performed by the construction team. As a consultant for this relevant utility company, I was entrusted to make the following designs: Urban greening project in Guadalupe, Goicoechea canton: this project was done in collaboration with two Forest Engineering students. Each one of the participants brought their own skills and knowledge in the different phases of this project: from the initial field work, the consultations/interviews to people in the community, work with possible leaders, mapping, the selection of adequate species, as well as the conceptualization and design of the project, for which a final report and presentation were developed. The purpose of the project was to create a green axis along a very busy central urban street, with both commercial and residential uses on its sides. Solid waste containers projects: the purpose of this project was to understand the solid waste problem in the Virilla and Uruca company campuses, and to conceive a design (on a functional, architectural and structural level) that would provide means to better select and dispose solid waste in those facilities. This also involved allowing adequate recycling and reducing. For this project, I performed research on technical aspects and materials, the corresponding 3D-model and construction plans, in addition to a presentation and report. "Plantel Virilla" Park project: One of the company's facilities is an extensive campus in the middle of a highly industrialized and polluted area. Within this campus, the only "public" space for the use of the staff was altered, deforested and began to be taken as a parking area. With the purpose of giving a space for the worker's enjoyment and sharing, that could double as a vertical link between sections of the campus and a viewing platform, I created a design to accommodate all these functions. Among the tasks that I performed were: the conceptual work, research on technical aspects and materials, 3D-model and architectural plans, as well as a final presentation and report. Show less

    • Intern (Urban planning)
      • Jul 2008 - Jan 2009

I was involved, as an intern, in the organization in charge of the development of the regional and local planning instruments for the Costa Rican Great Metropolitan Area. This organization, PRUGAM, was partly supported and financed by the European Union. Together with another student, Harold Guevara, it was developed a plan for the Coyol zone, one of the most strategically significant zones of the GAM, as it is still relatively undeveloped and is shared among five municipalities (implying the difficulty of implementing a unified planning system). As such, this area has a great potential for the expansion of technological industry, the creation of a logistics center and a new city, designed under urban design and planning good practices, such as an integrated road network, an integrated network of public transport (associated to other mobility options), linear parks, an adequate provision of social and communal facilities, mixed uses, compact centers and middle to high densities. As deliverables were the general reports, cartography and presentations to representatives of the public and private sectors. Show less
