Gram Vikas (GV) is a 40-year-old nonprofit that works in rural infrastructure from water supply to education to energy. At GV, I led the renewal of a solar-battery micro-grid in the village of Maligaon, in Kalahandi district, Odisha. Ours is the first village-level solar-battery micro-grid to use lithium-ion batteries in India. EWB-USA is a nonprofit that works in rural infrastructure, partnering with communities to meet their basic human needs. Our chapter worked on two projects. The first, to plan and implement a water supply system over a square mile in Los Sanchez, Dominican Republic. The second, to design and build rainwater harvesting systems for three school buildings in Mkutani, Tanzania. At EkStep, I conducted research to evaluate their efficacy in low-resource primary schools and initiate partnerships with micro-telecom companies to target rural areas lacking connectivity.
