    • Training Officer
      • May 2008 - Present

I have taken on several roles as a member of the Canadian Forces over the years. I am currently in a department of the reserves called the Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC) which specializes in running the Canadian Cadet Program. This program is for youth aged 12 to 19 and aims to instill a sense of citizenship, teaches many life skills such as leadership, public speaking, and physical fitness, and offers many unique opportunities including survival training, summer camps, and even international expeditions.Within the CIC I have held the positions of Band Officer, Instructor, and Training Officer with multiple units throughout BC. I have also worked with provincial events including the BC Honour Band and regional expeditions which include mountain biking, canoeing, and hiking. I am currently working as the Training Officer with one of the army cadet corps in Victoria housed in the Bay Street Armoury. Particularly in the role as Training Officer I am required to demonstrate extremely strong organizational skills as my duties include planning and running the entire training program for the unit. I instruct classes and focus a lot of time developing the leadership skills of the senior cadets of the unit.

    • Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Center Staff
      • Jun 2006 - Aug 2012

For seven consecutive summers I attended the Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Center as a staff member in the School of Music. Over these years I progressed through the school working first as a staff cadet, followed by two years of being a music instructor providing drill instruction, private lessons, theory, and ensemble. This was followed with three years working as the instrument supervisor where my main duties were administrative within the school while specializing in instrument repairs. I also continued to instruct drill and private lessons during this time. In my most recent year (2012) I was awarded the position of Director of Military Bands. This role required me to plan and run the summer program for three different courses, work with adult staff members (music instructors), and develop cadet staff members. In addition to these duties I continued to assist in all the areas of the school that I had in previous years. My dedication to the program, organization, instruction, and leadership skills in particular were showcased in these positions through a strong work ethic to always put the cadets first and ensure they receive the highest quality education and experience possible.

    • Sustainability and Climate Change Specialist
      • Jul 2019 - Aug 2020

The City of Red Deer engaged with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and their Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program (MCIP). Through this program, I was hired as a climate change mitigation specialist to help the The City implement initiatives that produce lasting improvements in municipal and community greenhouse gas emissions reductions. I was fortunate to have come into this position with established baseline GHG inventories, multiple efficiency and educational programs, and a newly revamped Environmental Master Plan, adopted by Council in July, 2019.During my time in this position I worked with multiple City departments and community stakeholders to help develop those strategies outlined in the EMP, and provided climate change expertise to my colleagues.

    • Crossfit Trainer
      • Aug 2018 - Jun 2019

Upon completing my Crossfit Level 1 Trainer course in April 2015 I began coaching at Crossfit Prince George and continued in this role until August 2016. Starting in August 2018, I again had the opportunity to coach in Victoria with Crossfit Zone., until I moved away in June 2019. During each one hour class I was responsible for running an effective warm up, demonstrating skills, organizing the class, encouraging each member to push themselves, and continually ensure safety. One of the greatest aspects of Crossfit is the community. As a coach I always bring it upon myself to ensure this part of the sport continues to thrive by getting to know each athlete on a more personal level and keeping track of each members goals and progress. I also find it very important to keep up the "little things" like entering my athletes scores into the online database, recording personal records, and helping individuals with weaknesses by offering different drills and exercises for personal improvement.

Synergy focuses on catalyzing the green economy by working with a variety of clients to reduce carbon emissions. Carbon accounting is most often used to show the environmental impacts of a company. Historical data is collected to show past usage and carbon emissions resulting from sources including energy and water usage, company travel, staff commuting, paper usage, product shipping, and more. From these carbon footprint reports, tangible solutions are presented to the client leading to reduced carbon emissions, and often associated expenses (less energy use = smaller utility bills!). My specific role with these carbon footprint reports was focused on the data collection, analysis, and report writing. Data was collected using utility accounts and archived billing info, and resource usage was similarly collected by recording supplier invoicing or company ledgers. This data was input and analysed using Excel with an in-house template system that is updated and third-party verified annually. The report itself presents historical usage, anticipated trends, and recommendations for capital investments, complete with full ROI calculations, smaller investments, and behavioral changes all aimed at reducing carbon emissions and resource usage. Some of the other tasks I assisted with included carbon accounting for airports through the international Airport Carbon Accounting (ACA) program; technical research and report writing on renewable/ low-carbon energy; sustainable building and renovation planning; waste audits; water audits; and ongoing research to find new solutions to fight climate change in a variety of sectors and applications.

    • Engineering and Administrative support
      • Feb 2017 - Jul 2017

This opportunity, working directly with a civil engineer, introduced me to many new aspects of the engineering and project management world. Most of my duties were clerical which included written correspondence, filing, and telephone communications. I was also able to learn basic AutoCAD functions to assist with drafting, and was involved in coordinating with utilities (BCHydro, Telus, Shaw, and Fortis BC) for various projects. • Resource Technician
      • Aug 2015 - Mar 2016

Working with the Omineca Regional Hydrogeologist I was involved with well sampling, observation well monitoring, and assisting with a UNBC study which involved installing piezometers at several study locations along a stretch of steam in Vanderhoof. I also assisted the Water Officers with water licencing including new applications and amendments. I was also heavily involved with a historically low flow stream system north of Vanderhoof. I was given the opportunity to take on the project involving researching the area, conducting stream flow measurements, and looking at installing ongoing monitoring systems for the future.

    • Resource Technician
      • Mar 2015 - Apr 2015

For this temporary contract I worked in the Water Stewardship Office assisting the head hydrogeologist. My main duties included working with ArcGIS and the hydro groundwater toolbox to develop a three dimensional model of aquifers near Prince George. In order to do this I had to collect and compile water well information available on online databases, manipulate these data into a format usable by ArcGIS, and develop a work plan to successfully use the hydro groundwater tools in creating the final product.I also had the opportunity to do field work collecting well information and sampling the water to send to the lab for testing.

The Environmental Engineering program is a 4.5 year joint degree with UNBC and UBC. 1st, 2nd, and 5th (1 term) year studies are completed at UNBC, while 3rd and 4th years are completed at UBC. This allows students of the program to receive exposure to engineering labs UNBC does not yet have the facilities for, while gaining most of our education at Canada's Green University. Courses in this program are quite varied allowing students to gain exposure to several types of engineering and concepts, with a focus on civil and chemical engineering. Electives in 4th year allow students to gain more exposure to topics of interest. For myself this included building science, energy development, and sustainable planning.

This summer internship was located in Prince Rupert,BC at the Ridley Island Corridor Project. After receiving training in both the Terrace and Prince Rupert offices I began my work on the project site. My responsibility there was quality control of the aggregate crushing being conducted on site. This consisted of sampling aggregate several times each day and running it through a size distribution analysis. These results were communicated with project managers for the site as well as the crusher operators to ensure the gradation of material was consistent throughout the process. This internship required me to work alone for long hours showing my abilities to proficiently learn and apply new skills, maintain professionalism without direct supervision, and to problem solve by working with members of the site office.
