Critical to this success is its commitment to preserving the social fabric and architectural heritage of the City of Salem, while encouraging design excellence from designers and developers alike.   The Salem Bicycle Advisory Committee seeks to expand bike paths throughout Salem, MA and its surrounding communities, encourage alternative forms of transportation, reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and promote good health through exercise. Work spearheaded by Mr. DeMaio included the design and implementation of a network of protected lanes ("cycle tracks") in Salem, MA called "Vision 2020" (currently in the engineering design phase, with Fay, Spofford & Thorndike, Inc).
