  During years volunteering with the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPAW) I have taken part in several conservation projects, including 2 years of caring for the koala population at Yanchep National Park, Project Return to 1616, Dirk Hartog Island and Golden Bandicoot Translocation Project, Lorna Glen, Matuwa. During these placements I have gained practical experience in: • Working in a team both under the guidance of a senior as well as working independently • Working in an isolated area for an extended period of time • Handling and processing native wildlife including Western Barred Bandicoot, Boodie, Banded Hair Wallaby, Rufous Hair Wallaby, Shark Bay Mouse and Ash Grey Mouse. • Working with and setting up hand nets, cage traps and Elliot traps • Working with hand tools to build animal proof fences • Using the mapping program qGIS to digitally plan and design fence boundaries • Spotlighting and identifying target species using line transects and laser rangefinder. • Radio tracking over long distances on foot and by vehicle • Gained a working experience in the use and placement of motion sensor cameras • Gained practical experience in use of GPS mapping software and Microsoft Excel software to mark camera and feral animal trap positions and diagnose results • Gained practical experience in the setting of feral animal traps including snares, lures and 1080 baits • Took part in the capture and dissection of a feral cat’s digestion system to record prey eaten • Hands-on experience in the daily care of koalas including feeding, applying medicine and cleaning enclosures; • Practical experience with machinery while assisting in the re-landscaping of the koala enclosures; • Practical experience preparing feed, including cutting and collecting eucalypt branches; • Enhanced skills in communicating with the public, including giving talks on koalas to park visitors
