A pop-up library created in collaboration with the UMCP Art Library will be available for visitors to further explore concepts presented in the exhibition. Exhibition dates: July 22nd - August 31st Press Release: For centuries, craftwork such as embroidery, knitting, and quilting has been practiced by women in the home. Despite requiring extensive skill and training, these feminine-coded mediums have rarely received the same exposure and appreciation as traditional fine art. Because academic styles and mediums have often been determined by men throughout history, art practices that were predominantly performed by women have seldom been regarded as a true art form. Radical Threads questions the lasting omission of women’s work from the field of fine art, while encouraging the public to see domestic materials in a new light. Considering the intersection between the personal and the political, these artists bring attention to social and cultural issues that women still grapple with today. The exhibition prompts the question: How can artists use historically domestic art practices as vessels for resistance and change?
